Computers seem to offer more and more storage space each time a new hardware upgrade is released. While this is hugely convenient, sometimes users wish to transport only a few files from one place to another without having to carry their laptop or resort to e-mailing the files to their own e-mail address to access later. Flash drives, also referred to as thumb drives, jump drives, or USB drives, provide a quick and simple option for portable storage.

1. Select a flash drive that suits your needs. If you plan to use the drive as a way to move a few Word documents from your home computer to your work computer, you might not need a large amount of storage. Flash drives with less storage will be more affordable than and just as effective as the more expensive models.

2. Connect your flash drive to your computer's USB port. Aside from small specialty notebooks, most computers have at least one USB port available. Plug your device directly into an available port.

3. Open the flash drive's storage folder on your computer. When you plug your flash drive into a USB port, it should automatically prompt a folder to open to reveal the contents currently stored on the portable drive. If it does not, the drive will be visible in your My Computer folder. For Mac users, the drive should appear on your desktop.

4. Add files to the flash drive's folder. In order to store files on your flash drive, move the files into the removable disk's folder. You can do this by dragging and dropping the files, by copying and pasting, or by saving files directly to the drive.

5. To retrieve your saved files on another computer, plug the flash drive into its USB port. The folder should open automatically when the drive is plugged in, but if there are problems you can find the drive's folder in the same manner that is described above.

Tip: Files opened from a flash drive should open easily and you may forget they were stored on the drive. If you make any changes to the file, take care to save the updated file to the flash drive, as the default will likely save it to a temporary folder or to the computer’s hard drive.
